No airplanes leaving Lukla, so we headed down to Nima's village Kharakhola, he said only 5 hours, but it really took 12 hours. We visited schools, wandered around the village, which is built on the side of a mountain, so going anywhere is a big hike. Although the students study English, they have no native speakers here, so it is hard for us to communicate with them, I used my sketchbook, they all recognized Ama Dablam, and Tom talked to them in Welsh. Today, the second day of visits, the children put on a program of dances and put flower wreaths around our necks and many many scarves. We wonder how we are ever going to get out of Kharokhola. We can walk for a few days and perhaps hire a jeep over sketchy mountain roads, walk a few more days and catch a bus, or maybe get a helicopter up here. We also visited mingma's very humble home, and the local monastery, which had a fascinating collection of both Hindu and Buddhist statues and paintings.
