Guangzhou China Baiyun International Airport
Dawn in the airport. Hallways,
large arching domed light houses, filled
with dawning light, lighter than schools, much lighter than the doctor’s
office. Southern China Airways shows a movie to instruct us about
flying with drawings of airplanes against a backdrop of traditional Chinese
landscape, accompanied by harp music from a sad nostalgic movie… The
main character is an attractive young woman in a yellow summer dress and white
sweater showing us how to buckle a seat belt.
“in case of ditching, there are life vests under the seats”. We are also shown a surreal image of people
sliding down the drawings of chutes, then real people, very clean and sharply
dressed running from the airplane. Some of this is translated into sign
language, a Chinese hand dance at the end of the movie.
“If you cannot understand it without an
explanation, you cannot understand it with an explanation”
