The “the old masters” of the Renaissance are traditional exemplars of drawing skills and the human figure in art. A small drawing of Michelangelo or Rafael can be the anchor for an entire museum exhibit. But, the artistic mastery of the Renaissance is also problematic. As Kerry James Marshall points out: ‘we take it for granted that the people who make the best stuff are all European…At some point, you become acutely aware of your absence in the whole historical timeline that develops this narrative of mastery.” Marshall took a critical look at the idea of mastery in his exhibit Mastry, which used the conventions of paintings to deconstruct ideas about skills, mastery, artistic conventions and representations of the human form.
