Himalayan Bakeries

By some quirky circumstances there are bakeries up here, on the trek, the biggest one is in Namche, which styles itself as a German bakery, but in many of the villages there are smaller bakeries making beautiful rectangular loaves of bread, croissants, cookies, etc. They all know me now, and give me a discount, I visit with them around the ovens and talk about culture, the economy, the weather.  Right now in Hermann's Bakery in phakding, Bhingo is showing me videos of near misses in the past week at Lukla airport and the sorry state of Nealese air traffic control and the 16 or did he say 60 pilots under investigation for lacking authentic credentials. We are supposed to fly from Lukla day after tomorrow, already considered the world's most dangerous airport (look it up). Bhingo gives me plenty of free hot chocolate and I buy loaves of bread when they get out of the oven. But my favorite scene was the girls eating chocolate donuts, fresh baked in the bakery in Khumjung while we all listened to sacred sonorous Tibetan music. The girls were just out of school on Friday, the half school day.
